âYou sure you donât want to go hang out with your team tonight?â Dad asked as he drove out of the school parking lot, taking us home from the game. âCelebrating your win might help build rapport with the guys.â
I cast him a tired look. âI played awful.â
Dad sighed. âYou didnât expect your first game here to go perfect, did you?â
No, and I also hadnât expected to spend every second the ball wasnât in my hands thinking about my new friend, who happened to be a ghost. âNo, but Iâm just not really up to partying or anything. Pretty tired.â
Mentally and physically exhausted. Between a week of school, practice, tutoring, and now a football game, my mind and body were taxed. Not to mention Iâd been asked to believe a ghost was part of my life. The word wouldnât leave me alone.
Ghost.
August was a ghost.
The more times I thought about it, the more real it became.
Dad hummed. âHow about dinner then? Want me to stop by that diner in town and grab us a few things to go?â
My stomach rumbled at the sound of food. I hadnât eaten much today because, honestly, Iâd had too much on my mind and just forgot. âI could definitely go for some food.â
âI was hoping youâd say that. I havenât eaten since breakfast, and I think all we have left in the house is soup. I need something solid. Burgers?â he suggested, turning on the street toward the town square instead of home.
âBurgers,â I agreed.
The drive was less than a mile, but with so many people leaving the game, the streets were congested. Dad slowly inched the car through the traffic until he could pull into a parking spot in front of the jewelry store two doors down from the diner.
He glanced at me. âWant to come in, or would you rather wait in the car?â
âIâll wait if you donât mind. Close my eyes for a second.â
Dadâs eyes filled with concern. âPushed yourself pretty hard this week, kiddo. Donât overdo it.â
I hadnât exactly had a choice unless I just gave up football, and that wasnât an option. âIâm fine. I promise. Just had a lot on my mind lately and could probably sleep the rest of the weekend.â
My dad patted my thigh. âBe right back. Hold down the fort.â
âWill do my best.â I snorted, and he rolled his eyes before popping open the door and sliding out of the car.
After he shut the door, I watched him make his way inside the small diner with a yellow and white striped awning. The windows had hand-painted pictures of burgers, fries, milkshakes, and one pane that advertised Tuesdayâs two-for-one deals. I grew hungrier just looking at the place, so I averted my gaze to the jewelry shop directly in front of me.
The windows were blacked out with what appeared to be black opaque curtains. It was hard to tell, with the only light coming from the sparse street lamps and streaming from the windows next door. A sign hung on the door that read Unique pieces and rare finds at unbeatable prices.
